Johannes Vig lever et ensomt liv på Sandø. Han er skolelærer og da Sandø i øjeblikket er afskåret fra omverden pga. is må øens befolkning klare sig selv. Johannes er hemmeligt forelsket i både Annemari, købmandens unge datter og i gårdmandskonen Rigmor. Samtidig er Johannes liv meget trøstesløs og det er svært for ham at give sin kærlighed udtryk.
